I was skeptical that a single mat could really function as both a litter trap and a scratcher, seemed like it might do neither job particularly well. Turns out the grid design does actually hold onto litter that would otherwise get tracked everywhere, and it sits flat enough at the litter box entrance that it doesn't bunch up or slide around. My cat has taken to scratching on it after she's done in the box, which I didn't expect but I'll take it since it means fewer scratches on the hallway carpet. The natural sisal has a rough texture that seems satisfying for her claws without being harsh on her paws walking over it. Cleaning it is just a shake out over the trash can, though I have tossed it in the wash once and it came out fine.
